John and Taylor’s guests today were Melody Sky Weaver from the Port Townsend Library and Monique Gray Smith, who did the young adult adaptation of Braiding Sweetgrass which the Port Townsend community read this month. We had a very soulful conversation that is hard to characterize here. Just listen! And read!

(Airdate: March 15, 2023) Host Nan Evans talks with David Williams, a
Seattle-based naturalist about the concept of a “sense of place”. What does that mean? How can awareness of our own “sense of place” deepen our connections with the natural world? How can we use “sense of place” to work together to make the world a better place?

Everyone at KPTZ loves Pie ~ and Pi Day all day Tuesday, March 14 was a fine and festive station event. And we especially love you, our listeners, who rose to the occasion to exceed the $3,141.59 fundraising goal for the day, doubled by the generous donor match, by $1,766 ~ bringing in $8,050 in support of your local community radio outlet. Special thanks to event producer Chris Bricker, to musical guests Paul Rogers (who knows a thing or two about Pie!) and John Maxwell, to the baker’s dozen of Pie bakers who generously contributed artisan Pies as donor incentives, to the station volunteers who pitched in to help out ~ and certainly to ALL the contributing donors who took us past our funding goal for the day! Our other Pi Day goal was to add 15 new monthly donors, and at the end of the day KPTZ has added 17 new sustainers, among the 3/14 contributors. And if you missed out on donating to KPTZ on Pi Day, please know we will appreciate your added support at the Donate Now link (top of page) and by mail to KPTZ, PO Box 2091, Port Townsend, WA 98368. We are so very Grateful for your support!

(Airdate: March 14, 2023) Cris talks with the 2023 Community Read author Monique Gray Smith about her adaptation for Young Adults of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This edition is a delight to hold and view with added illustrations by Nicole Neidhardt. All three of these women represent tribes from different locations in North America. Monique is an author and teacher in her own right and we also talk about her own path and books. Most recently Tilly and Crazy Eights was published and listed for Canada Reads 2021.

Tuesday 3-14 is Pie Day. Whether you think of “pie” as 3.14 or as a yummy dessert, Pie Day at KPTZ will be worth tuning into! From 7:30am until 10pm, there will be all kinds of sweet programming. KPTZ’s Tuesday regulars will also be on hand, to tell you why we appreciate your support AND to pitch PIES! That’s right, there will be an ACTUAL PIE awarded each hour to a station donor. Keep your eyes – and ears – on the Pies, Tuesday March 14 on KPTZ. With special programming, music and more, it’ll be a sur-PIE-singly great day to show your support for your community radio station, KPTZ… where the “P” stands for PIE.
