Give Jefferson Give Hope

(Airdate: November 15, 2022) Give Jefferson is an annual fundraising campaign that facilitates a highly targeted effort focused on frontline needs in Jefferson County. This campaign has vetted recipients, providing a focal point for donors to consider supporting these organizations with the assurance that their donations are stewarded well. Missy Nielsen speaks with Jenn Kingfisher, Director of Community Partnerships and Heather Dudley Nolette of Bayside Housing, one of the nonprofit organizations looking towards this funding to support their efforts in providing transitional housing and support. PT High School Music Program

(Airdate: November 14, 2022) The PT High School music program is working toward an ambitious trip for the High School Orchestra to visit Los Angeles. They will experience music in a major city and play alongside other school-age musicians. Larry Stein attended a fundraising concert and spoke with Daniel Ferland, the head of the PT High School music program, and Dr. James Ray, respected regional music educator. We’ll also hear some clips from the concert.

(Airdate: November 8, 2022) Cris talks to Portland author Willy Vautin about his novels and his music! WIlly writes about real life both gritty and hopeful. His latest novel noir, The Night Always Comes, is set in Portland and is so of the moment in our country it hurts. It’s a heart-wrenching portrait of a woman hungry for security and home in a rapidly changing city. Willy has had two of his books made into films, Lean on Pete and The Motel Life. Don’t Skip out on Me is an ALA Notable book and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award. His band The Delines sets the background sound track for his writing and your reading.

Cuban Missile Crisis

(Airdate: November 7, 2022) October was the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and host Jim Burke spoke with local activist Peter Lumsdaine, with Physicians for Social Responsibility. They discuss the Cuban Missile Crisis and the parallels to the current climate of distrust, saber rattling and threat of nuclear war between Russia, NATO and the United States.

Community Tides ~ 11/04/22

(Airdate: November 4, 2022) The Community Boat Project is a job-training program aligned with the nearby Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding. Based out of Port Hadlock, Wayne Chimente and his talented crew of adult mentors provide hands-on, meaningful and organic learning experiences, by partnering with teens in unique programs that focus on real work, critical thinking, and human-social skills. Wayne is a Master Mariner, Master Rigger and Sailmaker, and he has 31 years in sail training. On-the-water programs with twenty different schooners and square-riggers throughout the world have given him and the Project a unique view of the horizon. Interns and students from the Community Boat Project have also been building tiny houses to help address the need for local transitional and affordable housing. Co-Hosts Chris Bricker and Siobhan Canty settle in for a great conversation with Wayne about the importance of all of it.

Peregrine Rock

(Airdate: November 2, 2022) Part 2 of Nan Evans’ conversation with geologists Michael Machetter and Jeff Tepper explores significant rocky outcropings and geology in Eastern Jefferson County. Part 1 focused on Tamanowas Rock, just west of Chimacum, and the volcanic history of our region. This second part will consider the impacts of glaciation and Peregrine Rock, a glacial erratic, a short hike from Tamanowas Rock. And, yes, East Jefferson County was covered by glaciers thousands of feet deep.
